According to Vietnamese media, Le Van Thiet, deputy director of the Department of Plant Protection under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, said that Vietnamese passion fruit has just been approved for export to China and will be shipped to Guangdong from Lang Son and Quang Ninh provinces in Vietnam on a pilot basis.
More than 80% of global passion fruit production is in South America every year, with Brazil, Peru, Colombia and Ecuador being the world's leading passion fruit exporters. Over the past five years, Vietnam's passion fruit production and export value have increased by more than 300%, making it one of the 10 most valuable fruit trees exported from Vietnam.
This year, Vietnam's passion fruit production is expected to reach 135,000 tons, mainly grown in Gia Lai and Dak Lak provinces. Gia Lai province has just included passion fruit as one of the four key fruit trees in the region and plans to plant 20,000 hectares of passion fruit by 2025, making it the largest passion fruit producer in Vietnam.
At present, Vietnam passion fruit has been exported to the markets of France, Germany, Netherlands, South Korea, China Taiwan, Switzerland, etc. In 2020, Vietnam started negotiations with China on the access of passion fruit, and after nearly 2 years of preparation, it was finally allowed to export to China.
In recent years, with the rapid development of the domestic beverage and new-style tea drink market, the demand for passion fruit products has been increasing. According to the information released by the General Administration of Customs, China currently only allows the import of fresh passion fruit from Thailand and Laos. It is expected that after the official export of Vietnamese passion fruit to China, Vietnam will become one of the major sources of imported passion fruit.
The Department of Plant Protection of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development of Vietnam also revealed that negotiations for the export of Vietnamese durian to China are in the final stage and it is expected to be exported to the Chinese market within this year.
China has been the largest export market for Vietnamese durian, accounting for about 70 percent of the country's durian production. Without official access to China, Vietnamese durian has been exported to China through border trade or by posing as Thai durian. In early 2019, China increased inspections of the Sino-Vietnamese border fruit trade, requiring Vietnamese fruit to enter China through formal trade channels, making Vietnamese durian exports blocked. In February this year, Vietnam completed animal and plant quarantine negotiations on exporting durian to China and is now waiting for remote inspections of plantations and packing plants by the Chinese side.
Vietnam's durian cultivation is mainly concentrated in the middle and high altitude areas in the south and central regions, with an annual production of about 600,000 tons. Vietnamese durian is mainly harvested from April to the end of July, with a by-production period from October to March for varieties including Ri6 and Muangthong.
