The latest Chinese customs data shows that since May 2021, US has surpassed Australia to become the country that exports the most frozen beef to China.
 
According to customs data in recent years, Australia has exported more frozen beef to China, but since April 2021, its exports have fallen sharply, and the gap between the two countries has rapidly widened.
 
In April, US exported US$68 mln. (ca. RMB 440 mln.) worth of frozen beef to China, while the frozen beef imported from Australia was worth US$80 mln. (ca. RMB 518 mln.). In May, the trade pattern reversed. The United States exported US$90 mln. (ca. RMB 582 mln.) of frozen beef to China, while Australia exported US$47 mln. (ca. RMB 304 mln.). Since then, US beef exports to China have continued to grow. Last month, the total value of US frozen beef exports to China exceeded RMB700 mln. In comparison, Australia's exports to China are about RMB370 mln.
 
There are two main reasons for the decline in Australia's beef exports to China. First, as of December 7, 2020, China has suspended imports from six Australian beef suppliers. Secondly, Australia's own beef production is also decreasing. Since the beginning of this year, due to heavy rains, Australia is undergoing a new round of "herd reconstruction" (referring to a way to increase the number of herds by restoring pastures and reducing slaughter). As a result, the beef production on the market has decreased. Due to the combination of dual factors, Australia's beef exports to China have continued to decline in the past few months, and the corresponding market share is occupied by US beef exporters.
 
In addition to beef products, China has also launched anti-dumping and anti-subsidy investigations on Australian wine.
