Exports of Paraguayan pork products plummeted 75% year-on-year from January to April this year due to multiple factors.

Paraguayan newspaper "El Momento" reports that data from the Paraguayan National Animal Health and Quality Service (Senacsa) show that in the first four months of this year, the Itapua Producers Union (Upisa), the only qualified exporter of pork products in Paraguay, exported 400,000 kilograms ($677,305) of pork products to only one market, neighboring Uruguay, far less than the 1.6 million kilograms sold to seven markets in the same period last year. This is much lower than the more than 1.6 million kilograms sold to seven markets during the same period last year. In other words, from January to April this year, Paraguay's overall exports of pork products fell by as much as 75 percent year-on-year. In the case of fresh meat alone, exports fell 89% year-on-year from January to April this year; in the same period, exports of mince and offal fell by 51% and 83%, respectively.
 
César Ros, director of Upisa, said that the global pork market is currently oversupplied and that China, a major pork consumer, is oversupplied, and that pork originally sold to China from other pork production areas ends up being resold to other markets at lower prices, thus reducing the competitiveness of Paraguayan pork exports. In addition, due to the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, Paraguay has not yet reached an agreement with Georgia, one of the most important pork export destinations in the past, this year. Complications in maritime logistics and high prices have also added to the already poor Paraguayan pork export industry.
 
In addition to the above external factors, the single export destination, the increase in feed prices and other production costs are the main internal causes of the plunge in exports of Paraguayan pork products.
