Leading Chocolate Expo Coming to Shanghai, Opportunity for Chocolate in Chinese Market
One of world's major chocolate expos "Salon du Chocolat", also known as the Paris Chocolate Show, will come to China for the first time in Nov. 2022.
The Shanghai edition will be attended by exhibitors such as cocoa bean growers, chocolate manufacturers, traders, distributors, trainers, packaging providers and third-party service as cold-chain transportation, warehousing & storage, etc.
The size of the chocolate market in China in 2019 was worth about 30 billion yuan ($4.63 billion), while maintaining a CGAR of 3.2%. Chinese average chocolate consumption is 2 pieces (ca. 100 grams) per year, while in Europe this number is nearly 100 times that of China. According to statistics, in the next year, global sales of chocolate products will reach 124 billion U.S. dollars and consumption will reach 10.6 million tons. From the perspective of per capita consumption, China's chocolate market has huge potential, and this field is still in the blue ocean stage.
According to Chinese customs data, China imported 100.8 million tons of cocoa and chocolate products in 2019, with an import value of US$483 million. In terms of value, the TOP10 source countries of China's imports of cocoa and chocolate products are mainly developed countries such as Europe, America, and Asia-Pacific, including Italy, Russia, Malaysia, Belgium, Switzerland, etc. The total import value of the TOP10 importing countries is as high as 413 million US dollars, accounting for 85.52 %, the total import volume reached 86,800 tons, accounting for 86.17%.
Take Russia as an example. In 2019, China imported 112.6 million US dollars’ worth of chocolate products from Russia, a total of 49,000 tons of products; in 2020, China imported 64,000 tons of chocolate (+30%) from Russia, amounting to 132 million US dollars (+17%).
In 2019, the sales scale of chocolate products in China was 3.41 billion U.S. dollars, a year-on-year increase of 4.76%. It is estimated that the annual sales in 2020 will reach 3.537 billion U.S. dollars, and the global sales will reach 3.765 billion U.S. dollars by 2023. In terms of consumption, China's chocolate product consumption reached 253,13 million tons in 2019, an increase of 1.43% year-on-year. It is expected that the annual consumption in 2020 will slowly increase to 253,580 tons, and the consumption will remain at 250,000 tons by 2023.
