Dec. 28, the General Administration of Customs of China (GACC) issued an announcement on the phytosanitary requirements of imported Laos citrus fruits, including Mandarin (Citrus reticulata), Pomelo (Citrus maxima) and Lemon (Citrus limon).
Orchards, packaging plants and cold facilities of exported Laos citrus shall be registered by Laos Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, and registered by GACC. Registration information should include name, address and registration number. Before the export season each year, GACC will publish the list on its website.
The citrus fruits grown in Laos, which include oranges, pomelo, and lemons, are expected to be transported to China in the next few months, according to Laos media. The initial shipment is about 50,000 tonnes worth US $50 million.
Some 3,600 hectares of land across the country are dedicated to the cultivation of citrus fruits, with 70 percent of crops produced solely for export.
Meanwhile, China is a key trade partner of agricultural products from Laos, accounting for more than 80% of total exports, particularly cassava, bananas, watermelon, sugarcane, and rubber.
Up to now, there’re 4 Laos fruits have been approved for export to China, incl. banana, watermelon, passion fruit and citrus. It is reported that the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry of Laos and China Customs are preparing for the export of durian, longan, dragon fruit and jackfruit to China.
The opening of the Laos-China Railway currently is expected to better facilitate exports to China from Laos and other countries in the region.
