Exports of Russian chocolate and its products to China soar

Exports of Russian chocolate and its products to China have increased nearly eightfold in the past five years, from 7000 tons in 2015 to 64000 tons in 2020, according to the Federal Agro-Industrial complex Export Development Center of the Russian Ministry of Agriculture.

In the past five years, the supply of chocolate confectionery products in Russia has doubled, exceeding 300000 tons in 2020. According to preliminary statistics, in the first seven months of this year, Russian chocolate exports increased by 23 percent to 144000 tons, and exports increased by 24 percent to 371 million US dollars. Exports surpassed not only last year's figures, but also 2019.

The Russian Confectionery Industry Enterprise Association estimates that Russian chocolate exports may exceed 760 million US dollars in 2021. The figure could make it one of the world's top 10 leading chocolate suppliers for the first time, surpassing Switzerland.

At present, there are about 120 confectionery companies in Russia engaged in export trade, an increase of 72% compared with 2019. Russian chocolate and its products have been shipped to more than 75 countries this year, with CIS countries and China being the main buyers. Nearly 1/5 were exported to Kazakhstan, followed by Uzbekistan, Belarus, Azerbaijan and China.

At present, Russia is the main supplier of imported chocolate products to China. Russian officials said that Russian ice cream exports to China will also increase significantly in the future. In the first eight months of 2021, the bilateral trade volume between Russia and China reached nearly US $89 billion, an increase of nearly 30% over last year, and not all of the increase came from commodities, and high-tech products also accounted for a considerable share.
