Sep. 18, the Animal and Plant Quarantine Department of China’s customs authority (GACC) issued a notice on suspension of imports of Taiwan sugar apple and wax apple to the mainland. According to the notice, China’s mainland customs authority has repeatedly detected pest, Planococcus minor from the exported sugar apple and wax apple from Taiwan to the mainland since the beginning of this year. The suspension came into force from Sep. 20, 2021.

Taiwan exported sugar apple of 4,942 tons last year, of which 4,792 tons were sold to the mainland, accounting for nearly 97%; in terms of wax apple, a total of about 14,284 tons were exported last year, of which 13,588 tons were sold to the mainland, accounting for more than 95%.

The ban has little impact on the mainland imported fruit market, since sugar apple and wax apple are not the main consumer fruits on the market.
