The latest Chinese customs data show that imports
in the first 11 months of 2021 were 8.72 million tons, down 2.5 per
cent from last year. China imported 677000 tons of meat in November, down from 775000 tons last year and down 12.6% from a year earlier. The
main reason is that low domestic pork prices in China this year have
reduced demand for overseas supplies, which in turn has affected overall
meat imports. However, meat imports rose slightly in November from 664000 tons in October.
Pork
accounts for the largest share of China's meat imports, and domestic
pork production has surged this year, oversupply has led to a sharp drop
in pork prices and pork imports have also been affected.
According
to the monitoring of China's Ministry of Agriculture and villages, on
December 6, the average price of pork in the national agricultural
products wholesale market was 24.74 yuan / kg; beef was 77.63 yuan / kg;
mutton was 71.40 yuan / kg; and white-striped chicken was 17.24 yuan /
kg.
Since mid-October, domestic
pork prices in China have fluctuated for eight consecutive weeks, up 41%
from the average pork price of 17.53 yuan / kg on October 12. Industry
insiders said that at present, the number of sows, live pigs and
slaughtered pigs are all at a high level. Against the background of the
continuous increase in pork supply, the shock rise in pork prices after
the bottom in mid-October is mainly driven by demand. On the one hand,
it is the substitution effect brought by the sharp rise in vegetable
prices, on the other hand, the peak demand for pork is formed by pickled
meat enema in winter. At the same time, the country has also opened the
second round of collection and storage work.
Since
March this year, the average monthly growth rate of newborn piglets in
large-scale pig farms in China has reached 1.5%, which means that there
will be a significant increase in the number of live pigs from September
this year to February next year. At the
same time, with the upgrading of consumption, the consumption of
poultry, beef and mutton, seafood and other products in China is growing
rapidly, while the proportion of pork consumption is declining year by
year. Therefore, if large-scale
disastrous weather does not affect the convergence of production and
marketing in the later period, it is unlikely that pork prices will rise
sharply during New Year's Day's Spring Festival. This also means that the volume and price of imported pork in China will remain low.
