The Chilean Fruit Exporters Association (ASOEX) Fresh Grapes Committee (Comité de Uva de Mesa) recently completed a successful promotion of fresh grapes to China for the 2021/22 season.

 
The Chilean Simfruit website reported on July 13 that Chile is one of the main suppliers of fresh grapes to China. According to data provided by Chinese customs, China imported more than 65,000 tons of fresh grapes from Chile between January and May this year, with an import value of more than 1 billion yuan (about $149 million). In May alone, China imported more than 33,000 tons of fresh grapes from Chile.
 
In April, the Chilean Fresh Grape Commission's promotion in China reached an unprecedented scale, with eight supermarkets and hypermarkets in China, including Sam's Club, Olé, Boxcar, Walmart, RT-Mart, Yonghui, Auchan and China Resources Vanguard (six in the previous season), with a total of 1,200 points of sale (990 in the previous season). In addition, the Commission has partnered with Pagoda, China's largest fruit chain, on various promotional activities.
 
For Chinese importers, the star of the season was the Muscat Beauty grape, characterized by its pink skin and firm, seedless flesh that is resistant to transport and storage. Muscat Beauty grapes remain fresh for 45 to 60 days after harvest, making it an ideal choice for exporters. Distributors say this variety is popular with Chinese consumers.

According to the report, Chilean grape producers are developing a number of new varieties of grapes, and in the future, seedless varieties will become the dominant variety of fresh grapes. These new varieties of grapes being developed are expected to enter China and other markets one after another in the coming years, it is expected to say.
