Monserrat Valenzuela, president of the Citrus Committee (Comité de Cítricos) of the Chilean Fruit Exporters Association (ASOEX), recently said that he will increase the promotion of Chilean lemons in the Chinese market.
The Chilean Simfruit website reported that Valenzuela noted, "China is still a very new market for Chilean citrus fruits, and this year we will focus our citrus promotion efforts to China, concentrating on lemon promotion."
Chile's citrus industry has grown significantly in recent years. The latest data released by the Chilean Citrus Commission shows that in just six years from 2015 to 2021, the total export of Chilean citrus fruits increased from 205,852 tons to 397,569 tons, an increase of 93.12%. Among them, the export volume of Chilean sweet orange increased from 66,611 tons to 103,161 tons in the same period, an increase of 54.9%. In addition, the export volume of Chilean lemons also increased by 136%, while the export volume of oranges increased by 164%.
In terms of sweet oranges, Valenzuela said, "Currently, Chile has about 6,300 hectares of orange trees, mainly in the Coquimbo and O'Higgins regions. Our export variety is mainly Navel oranges (Navel), but we also grow Cara Cara oranges (Cara Cara), a very successful red-fleshed variety with about 500 hectares planted in the country."
"Chilean sweet oranges are currently sold mainly to the United States and some specific countries in Europe. As things stand, Asia has not yet become a major market for Chilean sweet oranges." She added, "Citrus fruits have unique advantages in terms of taste, vitamin C content, size and ease of consumption, which makes them an easy snack in people's daily lives."
Looking ahead to this year's citrus fruit season, Valenzuela believes, "It will be a very difficult season for all citrus fruits due to expensive freight costs, logistics issues, and the impact of the new crown epidemic. However, thanks to the availability of more labor, the harvesting and packing of citrus will become easier."
"In the case of Chilean sweet oranges, production is expected to decrease by about 13 percent this season, although we still expect it to reach 90,000 tons of exports. The sweet orange fruit this season looks very good and is of the right size, and the sugar levels are as expected." Valenzuela said.
