From SeafoodNews, April 22 - The Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP) said shrimp exports are expected to grow 20 percent year-on-year in April, a forecast based on the strong growth achieved in March, bringing total shrimp product exports in the first quarter to more than $900 million, up 37 percent year-on-year.
This is a time when European and U.S. markets are preparing for summer food supplies and fall inventories. Demand for shrimp products in Europe and the U.S. will rise and the market will need summer food supplies more, while Vietnamese fishermen will continue to benefit from the dividends of market recovery and rising world consumer demand.
In response to growing market demand, many fishermen in the Mekong Delta have increased their investment in farming techniques and export of scientific and technological services.
Statistics from Vietnam's Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development show that Vietnam currently has more than 740,000 hectares of shrimp farming area with an annual production of more than 900,000 tons. Although the area is growing by only 1.5% per year, production has managed to increase by a significant 10% per year.
