The avocado is Peru's third major export fruit, which can be supplied to the global market all year round and brings more than $1 billion in revenue to Peru every year. However, in February this year, Peruvian avocado exports decreased by 6% year-on-year and by 19% in value, mainly due to the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, which affected the transport of the fruit.
In the first two months of 2022, Peruvian avocado exports amounted to 18,355 tons, with a total value of about $41 million. Compared to the same period in 2021, the export volume increased only slightly by 1%, but the export value decreased by 11%. In January, Peruvian avocado exports continued to be positive, with a 24% increase in export volume and 14% increase in export value. In February, avocado exports fell in both volume and value.
In February last year, Russia was the third largest export destination for Peruvian avocados, accounting for 11% of Peru's total exports. After only one year, in February this year Peru shipped only 989 tons of avocados to Russia, with a total value of $2 million. Compared to the same period last year, the volume fell by 49% and the value of exports by 34%. Meanwhile, the Chinese market overtook Russia, becoming the third largest export destination for Peruvian avocados in February with $2.38 million in exports.
The most important consumer markets for Peruvian avocados are in Europe. Affected by the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, Peruvian avocado shipments to the Netherlands totaled only 5,397 tons with a total value of $11 million, down 17% from 5,166 tons in the same period last year. In addition to logistical disruptions, higher gas, oil and food prices in Europe have all affected consumer demand for avocados.
Peruvian avocado exports are concentrated in destination, with more than half going to Europe and the United States. Peruvian avocado exports have not yet entered the peak season, and if the European economy does not improve in the coming months, Peruvian exporters will be forced to find other markets.
