1. The price of pigs in China has plummeted.
In the third week of February, the prices of domestic pig products fell sharply, and the prices of eggs, chicken, commercial broiler chickens, beef and mutton followed suit. Pig and pork prices fell the most sharply, with pig prices down 57% year-on-year and pork down 51.4% year-on-year.
2. China suspends the import of Canadian poultry and related products.
On February 5, 2022, Canada reported to the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) a case of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) of H5N1 subtype on January 30th in a turkey farm in the country. The Chinese Customs issued a notice prohibiting the direct or indirect import of Canadian poultry and related products.
3. South Africa shipped the first batch of lemon products to China.
South Africa shipped its first lemon products to China last week, which is expected to increase export revenue by 325 million rand. Argentina and Chile have previously dominated exports of lemon products from countries in the southern hemisphere to China, and South Africa is expected to overtake Argentina and Chile to export 25000 tons of lemon products to China by 2024.
4. Burmese corn is allowed to be exported to China.
On February 18, China's General Administration of Customs issued a notice allowing the import of Burmese corn that meets the relevant requirements.
China will become the third largest importer of Russian food in 2021.
In 2021, Russian food exports to China fell 12 per cent to US $3.5 billion, ranking third behind the European Union and Turkey. China lost its position as the largest buyer of Russian food in 2021 because of a sharp decline in Russia's fish supply. Before the COVID-19 outbreak, China traditionally bought raw materials, frozen haddock, mainly from Russia and processed them in its own factories into a more expensive product, fish fillets, for the EU and US markets. Russia's frozen fish exports to China fell by 60% compared with the same period last year, and the mouth volume decreased by nearly 2/3.
